Working with personality disorder and complex emotional needs – service and practice development |
|
I am involved in developing treatment pathways for personality disorder and complex emotional need. This provides opportunities for learning about service development and commissioning. I also have extensive experience of working with and understanding complex presentations and comorbidity. This provides opportunities for developing training, developing the role of assessment and formulation, audit, quality improvement and clinical research in this area |

Psychosexual medicine |
|
I had started a QIP on sexual dysfunctions in patients under mental health team with a view to identify the extent of the problem and to see how confident are our clinicians in identifying the sexual difficulties and managing these difficulties. Often sexual difficulties are missed or not prioritised though they are a common side effect of psychotropics. I am hoping to assess this gap in the services with a view to identify the need of a specialist clinic for managing these. |

Trauma Recovery and Addiction within a Therapeutic Community. Develop hands-on skills in trauma-informed, evidence-based approaches to addiction and complex trauma recovery. Based at Hamoaze House— a therapeutic community rooted in structure, co-production, and relational safety—this placement supports deep learning beyond diagnostic and prescribing models. |
Primary – Andy Maguire, CEO Hamoaze House: amaguire@hamoazehouse.org.uk Trustee: alison.battersby@gmail.com |
This is a rare opportunity to become part of—not merely observe—a recovery community that challenges the myth that “nothing works” for addiction and trauma. You’ll gain confidence using psychological and relational skills as powerful tools in themselves, which will enhance your wider psychiatric practice. Alison’s own experience of a similar |

Dr Charles Dixon, consultant psychiatrist for the Eastern Rehabilitation service. Feel free to email or call me, charlesdixon@nhs.net M:07870576590 |
This is an opportunity to gain invaluable experience of complex psychosis and rehabilitation, assessment and management. There would be a particular emphasis on use of the mental health act, complex prescribing especially the use of clozapine and long acting injections and you could also get involved with the new clozapine community initiation pilot; though we could of course be flexible in meeting your learning needs. |

The RISE Mood Disorders Clinic offers a specialist training opportunity for higher psychiatry trainees interested in developing advanced skills in the assessment and management of complex mood disorders, including treatment-resistant depression and bipolar affective disorder. There will be opportunities to become involved with the delivery of clinical research in an official capacity (as sub-or primary-investigators) as a part of the placement. The RISE Mood Disorder Research Clinic is part of a UK-wide network of research clinics that make up the Mood Disorders workstream of the MH-TRC Mission (a NIHR project coordinated via the University of Oxford). This aims for clinical and academic institutions within the UK to work collaboratively to advance research and improve outcomes for people affected by mood disorders. As a network of clinics country-wide, there will be opportunities for trainees to get involved with cross-site partnerships and teaching sessions regarding innovative treatments for affective disorder. |
Contact person and role Dr Adam Monsell, consultant psychiatrist, RISE Clinic email: adam.monsell2@nhs.net Dr Merryn Anderson, consultant psychiatrists, RISE Clinic email: merryn.anderson@nhs.net Please also cc in dpt.riseresearchclinic@nhs.net into email correspondence about the post. |
Further information (in no more than 100 words please) Higher trainees undertaking a special interest or professional development placement within the RISE Mood Disorders Clinic will contribute one day (either per week or fortnightly, depending on availability) to the clinical and academic work of the service. During their special interest sessions trainees can: - Participate in the assessment, formulation, and ongoing management of patients with complex mood disorders under consultant supervision. - Contribute to multidisciplinary discussions regarding diagnostic, therapeutic, and service-planning considerations. - Engage with the clinic’s research activity, with opportunities to become formally involved in academic or industry-sponsored clinical studies. - Attend relevant academic meetings, case discussions and contribute to service-based teaching where appropriate. - Work collaboratively within the research department, alongside research assistants, clinicians, and academics with diverse clinical and research backgrounds. This placement enables higher trainees to develop specialist expertise in mood disorders, gain exposure to translational research, and enhance skills in leadership, supervision, and academic collaboration. |
